Refrigerant Management
Solvents Australia’s partner company, Solgas Australia, operates a comprehensive refrigerant management facility that includes waste refrigerant collection, bulk storage, refrigerant analysis and processing equipment for purifying waste refrigerants to new product standards. Refrigeration and airconditioning contractors are required by law to recover used refrigerants. Solgas Australia works with contractors to assist them to meet their legal obligations. In the Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong regions, contractors can call for asssistance with recovery cylinders, prompt cylinder pickup and receive prompt payment of $3/kg for recovered refrigerant. Solgas Australia is a participating company in the refrigerant management scheme operated by Refrigerant Reclaim Australia (RRA). Waste mixed refrigerant collected from contractors is accumulated and despatched to RRA for environmentally responsible disposal. Special R22 Program for Contractors Contractors who return clean R22 are now receiving $5/kg for reclaimable refrigerant. By returning clean R22, they become eligible to purchase reclaimed R22 at a discount on the new R22 price. With a large installed base of equipment operating on R22, there will be a continuing demand for R22 over the next few years, so participation in the program can make very good sense. About Refrigerants Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), once the mainstay of the refrigeration and airconditioning industries, have now been replaced by more environmentally acceptable products. However, further changes are happening as the world moves towards products with even lower environmental impact. The interim hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) products are now being replaced with hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and even these are to be replaced with new products such as the hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs). Two decades ago, the major concern was in regard to the depletion of the ozone layer. With many zero ODP (ozone depleting potential) products well established, the attention has turned to global warming potential (GWP). The refrigerants of the future will have zero ODP and low GWP. Refrigerants only damage the environment when they are released to the atmosphere. It makes very good sense to recover, reclaim and reuse existing refrigerants wherever possible.
